Yujia Qin named Co-Director of the MEDAI Core

Yujia Qin, PhD, is the new Co-Director of PAC-AID’s Medical AI & Data Science (MEDAI) Core, leading it with Peter Sadowski, PhD. PAC-AID’s Multiple Principal Investigators, John Shepherd and Youping Deng, named her to the role in October.

The MEDAI Core is the Center’s technical engine. It curates and harmonizes clinical, imaging, and multi-omics data, and it builds and applies AI, machine learning, and large language model methods for PAC-AID’s research projects and pilot investigators.

Dr. Qin is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences and a Bioinformatics Data Scientist in the Bioinformatics Core at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She earned a PhD in Microbiology and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma.

Her research focuses on computational genomics, multi-omics analysis, and machine learning in biomedical research, with applications in cancer biology, biomarker discovery, and disease risk prediction. She is the Principal Investigator of an NIH AIM-AHEAD-funded project and has led NIH-supported initiatives in cloud-based bioinformatics training and data science capacity building.

She already leads education for the MEDAI Core, designing and delivering its ML and AI workshops and tutorials and supporting multi-omics integration for investigators. She continues that work as Co-Director.

“I’m excited to take on this new role and look forward to working with Peter and the entire PAC-AID team to contribute to its success,” Dr. Qin said.
