Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

Anthony Kuh, PhD, is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He received his BS in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979, his MS in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1980, and his PhD in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 1987.

His research covers neural networks and machine learning, adaptive signal processing, sensor networks, and renewable energy and smart grid applications, with recent work on kernel methods and federated learning. He directs the Smart Campus Energy Lab at UH Mānoa, which develops technologies and analytics for sustainability and renewable energy.

Kuh received a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, is an IEEE Life Fellow, and was a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar at Imperial College London. He served as a program director in the NSF Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (2017-2021 and 2023-2025), has served on the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors, and is a past president of the Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association. On the PAC-AID Internal Advisory Committee he advises on the Center’s machine learning and data science methods and on ties to engineering and computing at UH Mānoa.
