Binhua “Peter” Zhou, MD, PhD

Binhua “Peter” Zhou, MD, PhD, is a Professor in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and holds the Madeline F. James & Edith D. Gardner Endowed Chair. Zhou directs the Center for Cancer and Metabolism, an NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), and co-leads a research program at the UK Markey Cancer Center. Zhou received an MD from Guangzhou Medical University in China and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, and completed postdoctoral training in breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Zhou’s research addresses metastasis, the spread of cancer cells from a primary tumor to distant sites, with a focus on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the function and regulation of the Snail and Slug transcription factors that control it. The goal of this work is to find new ways to prevent and treat metastatic breast cancer.

On the PAC-AID External Advisory Committee, Zhou draws on experience leading a COBRE center to advise on the Center’s scientific direction, research-project progress, and development of early-stage investigators.
